HEALTHCARE
Systems-Thinking Psychosocial Risk Analysis
REAL WORLD PROBLEM
Assess and analyse the psychosocial hazards and risks for healthcare staff working in a mental health ward. Using a human factors approach to complement the organisational OHS program framework within required operational timelines. Generate innovative and practical recommendations for systemic change in partnership with the OHS team.
HUMAN FACTORS INNOVATION APPROACH
Applying several Human Factors models and systems thinking analysis methods using a participatory ergonomics approach. Focusing on work design by analysing work as imagined versus work as done to identify contributing factors and system elements and interactions leading to psychosocial hazard exposure and risk of psychological injury.
A mixed methods approach was used to capture a range of qualitative and quantitative data with all levels of staff from frontline to executive.
Data collection comprised site visits, risk assessment surveys, analysis of existing organisational data, focus groups and semi-structured interviews with staff to gain in-depth insights and staff generated systemic risk controls.
OUTCOME
Triangulation of results and thematic analysis identified systemic work design factors comprised the majority of psychosocial hazards and subsequent experience of stress reported by staff.
Human Factors models provided user-friendly and relatable language to support staff to evaluate their work system in-depth and how system elements interact. Thereby, allowing understanding of how these interactions may lead to the emergence of psychosocial hazards and risk to staff.
Insights and recommendations across all levels of the work system presented to executive and staff in a variety of mediums generated momentum for change and improvement.
MANUFACTURING
Workplace Ergonomics Manual Handling Project
REAL WORLD PROBLEM
Assess and evaluate operator concerns in relation to workload across a range of paper manufacturing manual handling tasks. Re-assessment of an OHS problem using an innovative human factors lens. Generate deep user-centred insights from the frontline perspective and generate a range of practical interventions for improvement.
HUMAN FACTORS INNOVATION APPROACH
Applying Human Factors models, systems thinking analysis methods using a participatory ergonomics approach. Focusing on work design by analysing work as imagined versus work as done to identify contributing factors and system elements and interactions leading to psychosocial hazard exposure and risk of psychological injury.
A mixed methods approach was used to capture a range of qualitative and quantitative data with all levels of staff from frontline to senior management.
Data collection comprised desktop review of organisational data, site visits, observations of staff performing work as done, anthropometric data collection and analysis, work layout and plant usability analysis, semi-structured interviews with staff to elicit risk controls by staff working within the work system.
OUTCOME
Physical and psychosocial contributing factors were identified that were not discovered previously in relation to task and workload demands. Broader work design insights were also generated from a systems thinking analysis providing a holistic and in-depth understanding to the problem from a human factors lens.
A range of interventions across all levels of the work system were presented through a series of presentations, visual and written reports generating a robust foundation for staff consultation on improvement.
